Fishing and Beach BBQ in San Pedro, Belize

Catching a fish is memorable. Sitting on a Belizean beach while that same fish is prepared for lunch can turn a fishing trip into one of the best days of your vacation.

On selected Captain Nato’s Charters trips, a fishing day can include a beach stop, freshly prepared catch and time for a swim. It is a relaxed experience, but there are a few things to understand before booking.

Which trips can include a beach BBQ?

A catch-and-cook beach lunch is most naturally paired with:

  • Reef and Bottom Fishing
  • Fish & Snorkel
  • Certain full-day combination trips

It is not automatically included with every trip or departure. The plan depends on the package selected, trip length, weather, fishing conditions and whether a suitable legal catch is available.

If a beach BBQ is important to your family, request it when booking so Captain Nato can confirm what is included and plan accordingly.

What can become lunch?

Reef and bottom fishing can produce snapper, jacks, barracuda, grouper and other species. However, only fish that are legal to keep can be prepared.

Your guide will consider:

  • Whether the species is protected
  • Open and closed seasons
  • Minimum and maximum sizes
  • Marine-reserve rules
  • Whether the fish is suitable for the meal
  • How much catch the group actually needs

Bonefish, permit and tarpon are legally protected throughout Belize and must be released immediately. They can never become part of a beach BBQ.

Some other species—including Nassau grouper, lobster and conch—have seasonal or size restrictions. Read our [Belize Fishing Rules guide] for the principal regulations.

What the day may look like

A full fishing and beach-lunch day will normally begin with the fishing.

Depending on conditions, your guide may work along the reef, channels, mangrove edges or other productive areas for legal reef species. There is no guaranteed sequence or guaranteed catch—the guide chooses locations according to the weather and what the water is doing.

When conditions and the itinerary allow, the boat can stop at a suitable beach around lunchtime. Your guide prepares the legal catch simply, and the group has time to eat, relax and possibly swim.

After lunch, the day may continue with more fishing or a snorkeling stop, depending on the trip booked, remaining time and conditions.

This flexibility should not be confused with an unlimited itinerary. Travel time, weather, tides and the agreed trip length still determine what can reasonably fit into the day.

What if we do not catch lunch?

Fishing is never guaranteed, and neither is catching a suitable species in time for the meal.

Ask Captain Nato when booking what alternative lunch arrangement applies if the group does not catch enough legal fish. That way, everyone understands the plan before leaving the dock—especially families with children or guests who need to eat at a particular time.

The value of the trip is still the complete day on the water, not a promise that a particular fish will cooperate.

Fish & Snorkel for mixed-interest groups

Fish & Snorkel can be especially suitable when everyone in the group does not want to fish all day.

Part of the group can enjoy the fishing while the itinerary also includes an opportunity to snorkel. A beach-lunch stop can provide another change of pace for children and less fishing-focused guests.

Snorkeling locations and swimming opportunities depend on water and weather conditions. Dolphins and manatees may occasionally be seen, but wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Who prepares the meal?

Your trip will be guided by Captain Nato, one of his brothers—Ezequiel or Tayo—or Nato’s son Hazi.

The same Verde family member guiding the fishing manages the day and, when included in the arranged itinerary, prepares the beach lunch. This keeps the experience personal: one family guide is responsible for helping you fish, handling the legal catch and coordinating the stop.

Tell us about your group beforehand

When requesting a beach BBQ, let Captain Nato know about:

  • Food allergies
  • Dietary restrictions
  • Children’s ages
  • Anyone who does not eat fish
  • Preferred drinks and snacks
  • Whether snorkeling or swimming is important
  • Any mobility concerns that could affect a beach landing

Do not wait until lunchtime to mention a serious allergy or dietary restriction. Advance notice gives the guide time to confirm whether the trip can accommodate it safely.

What to bring

For a fishing and beach day, bring:

  • Swimsuit and towel
  • Sun hat
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Sun-protective clothing
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Light rain jacket
  • Bug repellent
  • Dry bag or waterproof protection for electronics
  • Any personal medication

See our complete [What to Bring on Your Belize Fishing Trip] checklist before departure.

Confirm what your booking includes

Before paying your deposit, confirm:

  • Whether the beach BBQ is included
  • Whether lunch, drinks and snacks are provided
  • Whether snorkeling equipment is needed
  • The expected trip duration
  • What happens if weather prevents a beach stop
  • What lunch alternative applies if there is no suitable catch

Clear expectations make the day more enjoyable for the guests and the guide.

More than a fishing trip

A beach BBQ adds something special to a day on the water: time to stop, enjoy the surroundings and share a meal connected to the morning’s fishing.

It should be presented honestly, though. The experience depends on nature, legal fishing rules and the itinerary arranged with Captain Nato—not a guaranteed catch appearing on command.

When everything comes together, that uncertainty is part of what makes the meal memorable.
