Daytime Fly & Spin Fishing
Meet the Grey Ghost of Belize’s Flats
Permit fishing rewards patience, quiet boat positioning and one well-timed presentation. The shot is never guaranteed—and that is exactly why anglers remember it.

What Permit Fishing Here Is Really Like
Permit have earned the nickname “grey ghost of the flats.” Their sharp eyesight, sensitivity to movement and habit of refusing a presentation that looks wrong make them a demanding target for guides and anglers alike.
Landing one is a real accomplishment, not a given. If you are brand-new to flats fishing, bonefish can provide a useful introduction before you build toward permit.
Timing a Permit Fishing Trip
Captain Nato’s local experience points to February through August as the strongest planning window, but the calendar alone never guarantees permit.
Dry-season window
February through August generally offers the conditions Nato favors for permit fishing around San Pedro.
Rising water
Rising tide can bring permit onto feeding flats. Wind, light and water clarity still shape the opportunity.
Different-size fish
Local fish are often around 3–10 lbs. Larger migrating permit may reach roughly 15–35 lbs, but size and presence vary.

What It Takes to Fool a Permit
Permit fishing is built around patience, presentation and the willingness to wait for the right opportunity.
Patience before pressure
A guide who waits for a clean shot instead of forcing a poor approach protects the opportunity.
Crab-style presentations
Crab imitations are a standard permit choice because they resemble natural forage on the flats.
Accuracy with limited time
A cast must reach the right zone without landing heavily or crossing the moving fish.
Refusals are normal
Even a careful presentation can be ignored. That is the nature of permit fishing, not proof the day failed.

What a Permit Day May Look Like
Your guide checks moving water, channels and flats according to tide and light, then poles quietly into position. The goal is to give you the best available presentation without spooking the fish.
Fly or spin, permit move quickly and the shot can be brief. A calm, accurate cast matters more than repeated casting.
Permit Are Catch-and-Release Only
Belize protects permit, bonefish and tarpon as catch-and-release sport fish. Every permit must be handled carefully and returned to the water.

Who Will Guide You?
Your trip is guided by Captain Nato, his brothers Ezequiel and Tayo, or Nato’s son Hazi. The standard across the family is the same: honest about the odds, patient enough to wait for a real opportunity, and invested in helping you make the best available cast.
